Job Summary:Mechanical Systems Engineer will report to the TIO
Project Systems Engineer, and s/he will establish and maintain the
master geometry 3D solid model of the observatory by translating
and assembling the models for the various subsystems created by
partner institutions and contractors. S/he will be responsible for
maintaining the baseline configuration of the Observatory,
including reviewing design submissions for compliance with
requirements and interfaces, and will participate in trade-off
studies that support the definition of the observatory
architecture. The Mechanical Systems Engineer will coordinate all
the 3D modeling activities of the project in the area of CAD/Model
information exchange and maintain project design standards and
guidelines. S/he will check mechanical interfaces and clearances.
S/he will interact with the Systems Engineering, Adaptive Optics,
and Instrument Groups, as well as the Telescope and Facilities
Departments, consisting of scientists and engineers responsible for
the design, analysis, and implementation of the observatory.Job
Duties:
- Maintain the geometric configuration of the observatory,
through:
- Maintenance and configuration control of the Observatory
Digital Mock Up
- Maintenance of the TMT Mass, Center of Gravity, and Mass
Moments of Inertia budgets, mechanical interfaces, and
space-envelopes for the subsystems and the entire system
- Develop the Observatory Geometric Architecture by:
- Performing trade-off studies to determine the best system
design to support observatory operations, including observing,
maintenance and servicing.
- Investigate clash/clearance issues within the master geometry
model and enforce system wide interface control by reviewing
drawings and CAD models against the interface requirements
- Create 3D engineering models and some 2D engineering drawings,
for interface control and fabrication, to support TMT partners and
project office engineers
- Maintain the Observatory Integrity of the Mechanical Interfaces
by:
- Create, update or modify mechanical interfaces drawings per
subsystem request.
- Develop engineering specifications, design plans, ongoing
modifications, and solution alternatives to accomplish
requirements
- Establish CAD standards across the partnership, including:
- Act as the liaison with and provide support in the area of CAD
modeling for partners and vendors who are developing engineering
designs for TMT
- Review CAD models and drawings delivered to the project for
adherence to CAD modeling standards
- Develop and maintain CAD modeling standards, including
templates and master geometry files
- Maintain and oversee the TMT Solid Works PDM system, including:
- Converting, merging, and assembling CAD files created by the
partners and contractors in various software tools into a master
geometry solid model in SolidWorks
- Create NAVISWORK model to support DMU or ongoing
development
- Oversee and define computer models and simulations to evaluate
engineering concepts, approaches, and alternatives to meet
objectives
- Create illustrations and animations for presentations and
documents
- Collaborate with engineers to:
- Define new strategies, approaches, methods and techniques to
enhance efforts
- Direct the testing and analysis of equipment and
instruments
- Prepare reports, journal and/or articlesMinimum Requirements:
- A BS degree in mechanical engineering, or related field.
- 3+ years of demonstrated experience in combined CAD and PDM
software system management, with SolidWorks and EPDM, in a
mechanical, aerospace, or similar engineering environment.
- Experience with Autodesk Inventor and Pro- Engineer is
desired.
- Experience with engineering design, fabrication, and
assembly
- Significant experience in Geometric Dimensioning and
Tolerancing (GD&T)
- Experience writing engineering documents, including
standards
- Some travel will be required to partner, vendor and observatory
locations.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Familiarity with advanced 3D modeling and 2D drawing
techniques
- Knowledge of engineering materials
- Familiarity with fabrication processes and machine shop
practices
- Familiarity with structural steel construction practices would
be an asset
- Knowledge of SolidWorks & familiarity with AutoDesk Inventor,
Pro-Engineer
- Working knowledge of PDMWorks Enterprise
- Knowledge of software tools for generating illustrations and
animations for reviews and reports
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work as part of a team on a large, distributed
instrumentation development project
- Ability to efficiently organize work and to work
independentlyThe position could be a remote position.Salary range:
$125,700 to $158,900 per year.TMT International Observatory is an
